Most of the rack mounted patch panel are with 19 inch width, so what ‘s the meaning?

19" refers to the width of the rack installed in the cabinet ( or frame), the difference of Cabinet and Frame is the Cabinet has shell and cover on top and bottom, but Frame and Cabinet is often referred to as "rack", they are cuboid shape, 19” case (rack) is suitable for frame and cabinet, the rack also comply with specific height restrictions so that rack from different manufacturer can be put into the cabinet.

19” chassis and cabinet is originally a specification control for electronic instrument made by U.S. military, its purpose is to unify the instrument size and convenient for fast assembly, replacement and maintenance, finally the specification is widely used by enterprises.

The advantage of the cabinet is to provide security protection and convenience expansion, chassis, in the early period it is used in industrial control platform, in recent years it is also widely used in network communication equipment due to the development of the network.

The definition of height unit U: 1U=1.75 inch = 44.45mm. Cabinets are using U as the basic unit, such as a 35U height cabinet, means the cabinet can be filled with total 35U high chassis, not means that the height of the cabinet from top to bottom is 35U.

Inch (482.6MM) is defined as the width of the box, it is the widest distance of the front side, usually there are mounting flange on both sides of the chassis, rather than the width of the chassis body, it is the width between two flanges. But in fact the width of the cabinet always bigger than 19”, most of them are more than 500mm ( width of 19" chassis is about 483mm), cabinet on the current market is with 500mm ~ 800mm width, some special specification reaches 1000mm, but the most common width is 600mm.
