Highly focused laser beams can cause damage to humans, such as eyes or skin. Therefore, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classify safety grade of laser equipment according to laser output value. Laser equipment should be marked its safety level by FDA or IEC standards. IEC standard divides the laser device into five grades, called Class1, Class2, Class3A, Class3B and Class4. For example, Class1 laser equipment, in "foreseeable conditions" is a kind of safety equipment; Class4 laser equipment, it is possible to generate harmful diffuse and will cause skin burns and fire, so people should be especially careful on class 4 equipment. FDA standard divides the laser device into six grades, namely, Class I, Class II a, Class II, Class III a, Class III b, and Class IV. For Class I, the amount of laser radiation is not considered harmful, and as for Class IV, the amount of laser radiation, no matter direct radiation or scattered, are harmful to both skin and eyes.
