Concatenation or cascade connection can be defined as two or more than two Ethernet switches or fiber media converters connected to each other in a certain way. According to needs, multiple switches or media converters can be cascaded in various ways. In a large LAN, such as campus network, a number of Ethernet switches or fiber media converter generally form a bus, tree or star cascaded structure in accordance with the performance and use of the network.
The metropolitan area network is an excellent example of the cascade of switches or media converters. At present, many local telecom departments have built a wide band of IP metropolitan area network. The broadband metropolitan area network (BMAN) is generally divided into 3 levels from the top to the bottom: the core layer, the convergence layer and the access layer. The core layer typically uses Gigabit Ethernet technology, convergence layer uses 1000M/100M Ethernet technology and the access layer uses 100M/10M Ethernet technology, this is the so-called "Gigabit to building, fast Ethernet to the floor, and 10M to the desktop".
Ethernet Switches or optical switches are generally cascaded through ordinary user ports, and some switches provide a special cascading port (Uplink Port). The difference between the two ports is that the common port conforms to the MDIX standard, while the cascaded port (or the upper port) meets the MDI standard. As a result, two ways of wiring are different: when two switches are cascaded through common ports, the cables between ports are cross cables (Crossover Cable), and when and only one of them passes through cascaded ports, straight through cable is adopted.
In order to concatenate conveniently, some switches provide a dual purpose port, which can be set to MDI or MDIX by switch or management software. Further, all or part of the ports on some switches have MDI/MDIX self calibration functions, which can automatically distinguish the type of network lines, and it is more convenient to concatenate.
