Common Faults In Installation Of Fiber Media Converter

1, First see whether the indicator for fiber optic media converter , optical module and the twisted pair port are on or not.

A, If indicator for fiber port of fiber media converter (FX) does not shine , please confirm whether the fiber is cross linked? One end of the fiber jumper is connected in parallel manner, and the other end is connected in cross way.

B, If indicator for fiber interface (FX) of A fiber optic media converter is on, indicator for fiber interface (FX) of B optical transceiver does not shine, the fault is existed in A media converter: one possibility is: fiber port (TX) of A media converter is bad, because fiber port (RX) of B media converter can not receive optical signal; the other possibility is fiber link of A media converter (TX) is with sending problems ( fiber cable or fiber optic jumper might be broken).

C, Indicator for twisted pair (TP is not on. Please make sure is there faulty or incorrect connection with the twisted pair. Fiberall suggest to test with a pass tester (however, twisted pair indicator of some media converter will be switched on after the fiber link is connected).

D, some fiber media converter have two RJ45 ports: (ToHUB) means that the connection line of the switch is through line; (ToNode) means that the connection line of the switch is cross line.

E, Some fiber media converter has a MPR switch on the side: it means the connection line of the switch is through line; DTE switch: means the connection line of the switch is cross line.

2, If the fiber optic cable and fiber jumper has been broken?

A, Fiber optic cable breaking test: use laser flashlights, sunlight,or other illuminant face on one end of the fiber optic connector or coupler; to see if there is visible light at the other end, if it is visible, it indicates that the cable is not broken.

B, Optical fiber connection test: use a laser torch, sunlight, etc., to face one end of the optical fiber jumper; to see if there is visible light at the other end, if it is visible, it indicates that the fiber jumper is not broken.

3, Is there mistake with half / duplex mode? Some fiber media converter have FDX switches on the side: FDX means full duplex and HDX switches means half duplex.

4, Optical power meter test: Optical power of fiber optic media converter or fiber optic transceiver under normal conditions: -10db to 18db; single mode 20 km: -8db to 15db; single mode 60 km: -5db to 12db; if the optical power of media converter is in -30db to 45db, we can judge there is problem with the fiber media converter.
